Find answers to common questions about managing and using your HSA through job changes, retirement and beyond.
What happens to my HSA when I die?
Your HSA will be treated as your surviving spouse’s HSA, but only if your spouse is the named beneficiary. If there is no surviving spouse or your spouse is not the beneficiary, then the savings account will cease to be an HSA and will be included in the federal gross income of your estate or named beneficiary.
Can I withdraw HSA funds without a penalty after age 65?
HSA withdrawals after age 65 are not subject to the additional HSA withdrawal penalty. Normal income tax may still apply when funds are not used for qualified medical expenses.
What happens to my HSA if I change jobs?
Your HSA and its balance remain yours if you change jobs or leave your employer. You may continue contributing if you remain eligible, and existing HSA funds can continue to be used for qualified medical expenses.
